How to Embrace Your Thoughts with Stream of Consciousness Journaling

Journaling used to feel like a huge task for me. I could never find the time, the perfect notebook, or even figure out what to write about. Then, I discovered one method that changed everything. Since incorporating it, I’ve been journaling almost daily, filling at least three pages per session.

The method I found is pretty simple and you’ve probably heard of it (or guessed it from the title). If not, don’t worry—I’ll walk you through it. It’s called stream of consciousness.

What is Stream of Consciousness?

Stream of consciousness is just a fancy term used to describe writing whatever is on your mind.

Sounds too easy to be effective, right? I know! Sometimes, the simplest methods often work best.

I remember when I was in high school, my English teacher gave us an assignment that I both dreaded and loved.

She’d set a timer for 5-10 minutes and tell us to just write. No topic. No direction. Nothing. We were on our own.

I’d sit there, staring at the blank page, wondering what to write. And with the clock ticking, the pressure would build until I finally gave up and just started writing whatever popped into my head. Next thing I knew, time was up, and the entire class was begging for more time to continue.

Stream of consciousness journaling is just like that—except now, I’m not staring in space wondering exactly what to write, I just allow my hands to write what’s in my head.

Why Stream of Consciousness Works

Stream of consciousness works because it allows us to let go of any expectations or limitations we may have when writing. It’s a free flow of thoughts and emotions, without judgment or criticism, so there’s no need to fear anything.

These are writings we don’t ever have to share with anyone! Think of how much added stress that takes off of you.

I know we can be harsh critics when it comes to anything we create but releasing the need to have everything polished out of fear that someone will judge you gives you the opportunity to have a personal, authentic and raw experience with your journaling.

How Stream of Consciousness Can Benefit You

  • Reduces stress and anxiety
Writing down our thoughts and emotions can be therapeutic. It allows us to release any pent-up feelings and process them in a healthy way, emotions excluded (or contained within the pages).
  • Increases self-awareness
As we let our thoughts flow freely onto paper, we may discover things about ourselves that we were previously unaware of. This happens to me all the time! It’s like finally opening my eyes to a part of me that was there all along. This helps us make better decisions which will bring positive changes in our lives.
  • Enhances creativity
Stream of consciousness breaks all the limiting rules that apply to a formal type of writing and with this freedom to think unlimited, new ideas and perspectives are bound to become a regular occurrence.

How to Start Stream of Consciousness Writing

Ready to give it a try? Here’s how to get started:

  1. Grab your journaling supplies
(if you don’t currently have any supplies, no worries, you can find my recommended journaling supplies here.)
  2. Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit.
  3. Set a timer for 5-10 minutes
(Even two minutes works if that’s all you have!)
  4. Start with this sentence:
“I don’t know what to write and I’m not sure what I’m doing but this is what I’m thinking…”
  5. Write whatever comes to mind next
Don’t stress about grammar, spelling, or making sense—just let it out.
  6. Repeat daily (or as often as you’d like).

7 Prompts to Inspire Your Stream of Consciousness Journaling

If you’re feeling stuck, try starting with one of these:

  1. What’s the first word that comes to mind right now? Why?
  2. What was the best moment of my day so far? Describe in detail.
  3. What is something I’ve been wanting to do but have been putting off? What are my reasons for neglecting it?
  4. When I’m moody, what’s the one thing I wish would happen the most? Describe in detail.
  5. What is something that has been on my mind a lot lately? How do I feel about it?
  6. If I had to move and I could only bring one thing with me, what would it be and why?
  7. Finish this sentence and explain why in detail, “I’m lucky to have…”

Embracing Your Thoughts

Remember, the key to stream of consciousness journaling is to let go of expectations, rules and judgement and just write whatever comes to mind.

Please don’t overthink it, don’t worry about making sense or following any structure. The only correct way is the way you choose to do it and the only wrong way is not doing it at all.
