The sky is tainted with clouds, some wispy, others begging to be laid on and rolled around in. It’s not sunny, but that’s only on my side.
I sit on the balcony with some cucumber water and a phone that doesn’t work, listening to the water rush by beneath me. The partition of the balcony blocks the wind from freely flowing in to cool me down, but air has a mind of its own, so I still feel the gentle kisses it steals.
I love this part. It’s not quiet, because nothing in nature is ever truly quiet, but it’s the absence of human chaos that I revel in.
Out here, I’m away from screams, loud chatter, and the low hum of conversations. Out here, I immerse myself in the blue of the ocean, the occasional birds and flying fish soaring by, and the clouds constantly morphing into things I can’t name.
I love the ocean, and this floating contraption is not too bad either.
I caught myself in a daydream, thinking I could truly live like this, and had to quickly remind myself of what happened the last time I had this feeling. If I make this wish again, I need to be very specific.
I left my shades in the room because who wears shades while lounging on a balcony? But now, as I squint off into the distance, I have the urge to protect my eyeballs.
Maybe after I get up, I’ll take a nap. There’s nothing stopping me from resting as much as I want. I did make plans with the zip line guy though, he probably doesn’t care whether I show up or not. Sliding on a rope a few decks high on a moving ship was not how I envisioned my first time, but what a story it will one day be.
I’m being lulled to sleep by the calming but treacherous waters below.
Fine! I guess I’ll just give in.
Who cares? I’m on a boat.
