It was my brother who asked me what the outcome of the basketball championship game was. I wasn’t following the game, but I knew the New York Knicks were finally in the Finals.
I found out they won in the most anticlimactic way possible: I Googled it.
After telling my brother that the Knicks did indeed win, I immediately asked out loud, “When’s the parade?”
It didn’t take long to get that question answered, thanks to Mayor Mamdani’s X (Twitter) post.
The last sports parade I attended was back in 2012 when the New York Giants won the Super Bowl. I only watch the Super Bowl for the ads and the halftime show.
Yes, I do not watch sports, even though I played netball, basketball, football (no, not NFL, soccer), and ran track and field. My stepdad once made fun of me for never watching a game despite playing sports very well.
I guess I’ve always been a rebel in that way. I wanted to learn the rules and then play exactly how I wanted, without being influenced by someone else.
I’m still this way, but I’ve also learned that observing other people in their craft is one of the quickest ways to learn.
So now, instead of forging my signature path in the dark, I look to books and people to help shine a light on a clearer path.
Will I ever deliberately sit down and watch a sports game? Probably not. I’m not even watching the World Cup games right now, even though I actually love the sport.
What I would do is go to the parade if there were ever one to attend.
And I did go to the Knicks Championship Parade.
