It is important to keep fit, but sometimes we just don’t have the motivation.

When you’re feeling lazy, it can be hard to get motivated and do something healthy.

But if you want to feel good about yourself and maintain a healthy lifestyle, the 10 tips in this article are a must-try.

What Does It Mean to Keep Fit?

Keeping fit is about having a healthy lifestyle. You don’t need to go to the gym five times a week or stay on a strict diet with boring exercise plans, but you should keep your body active and moving.

Why keep fit?

Keeping fit will keep you healthy. It can help prevent illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Plus, it also helps with other conditions like depression and anxiety because the endorphins released during exercise are natural mood enhancers. And in our busy society where there is a lot of stress, keeping fit can keep you mentally healthy.

How Can I Keep Fit at Home?

There are so many things you can do at home to keep fit. You don’t need equipment, and it doesn’t take a lot of time!

Tips for staying fit:

  • Keep a journal of what you eat, how much exercise you do, and any thoughts or worries that come up for the day to keep track of progress.
  • Keep your kitchen stocked with healthy food options, so it’s easy to make good choices when hunger kicks in. You can also try meal planning ahead of time!
  • Stay active by trying new sports, and don’t be afraid to keep challenging yourself.
  • Take time out for some solo exercise like playing games or doing stretching exercises wherever you are.
  • Keep your heart rate up with jogging, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), running stairs, walking, and cycling.
  • Keep fit by working out with a friend, so you can keep each other motivated and adhere to your workout routine.

Tips for Staying Active When Feeling Lazy

1. Start by Making a Plan

Knowing what you will do for your workout session makes it more appealing and less daunting. A plan is naturally easier to follow than winging it, especially on days when you’re feeling lazy.

Start by writing down an exercise or two that you want to complete today before work or after dinner, set a time to do them, and add it to your to-do list. Doing so will give your mind a task to accomplish, and to achieve the feeling of accomplishment, your mind won’t relax until that task is completed.

It’s like tricking your mind into doing things that you don’t feel like doing.

The more detailed and specific the plan, the better it is for mental clarity and focus.

So, start with a plan.

2. Eat Well and Get Enough Sleep

Your rest and how you eat impact the way you move and how you feel.

Eating healthy foods that are low in calories but high in nutrients can make it easier to maintain the energy needed for physical activity without burning out too quickly.

Sleep is just as important because if you’re not getting enough rest, your brain won’t have the energy it needs to keep you going.

Additionally, if you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to move around much during the day—you should still try to get an hour of exercise in at night before bedtime as exercise releases stress hormones that make your body feel better. Exercise also makes your body physically tired, so it will be easier to get more restful sleep.

The truth is, if you don’t take care of your body, you won’t feel like exercising, ever!

To keep fit, keep your rest and eating habits on the healthy side.

3. Create an Exercise Routine That Is Easy to Stick With

Routines are comforting because they keep things the same, which allows you to be more consistent.

If you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to do anything new or different, then it’s time to get creative with your workout routine.

Look for ways that will make exercising easier, like switching to a different time of day, spending less time at the gym, or maybe even trying an exercise that you find enjoyable.

It’s also important to keep it simple by finding something that involves little-to-no mental effort as your brain will be too tired for anything else.

Find what works best and keep doing it.

A tip to keep in mind when trying to stay fit is to know your peak hours of energy and schedule your workouts accordingly.

Some people are like me and are most energetic in the mornings, while others prefer evenings or nights.

If you know that mornings aren’t a good time for you to exercise, then avoid working out in the mornings.

If you keep finding yourself feeling lazy during the day, then try evening workouts.

Or, if you just want to switch things up, schedule your workout for the time of day when you feel most energetic.

The more energy you have, the easier it is to keep fit and stay active.

And knowing that will help keep you motivated!

4. Find an Activity That You Enjoy Doing

Forcing yourself to do something you hate will cause more delays than progress.

It’s okay to keep things simple!

It doesn’t matter if it’s riding a bike, playing catch with the kids, going on long walks, or running laps on your local track. Just find something you enjoy doing as long as it moves your body.

Keep fit by finding an activity that you enjoy and stick with it. You could try your hand at tennis, soccer, basketball, or even dancing.

The more you keep moving, the easier it will be to keep fit in general, and staying active becomes something that feels good instead of a chore.

Forcing yourself to keep doing things you don’t enjoy is only going to make staying fit harder than it needs to be.

Find the fun in fitness and keep on keepin’ fit!

5. Reward Yourself After Every Workout

Rewarding yourself for a job well done is the best way to keep fit!

When those rewards are enjoyable, you’ll naturally have the motivation you’ll need to push through your exercise.

For example:

My one and only motivation for exercising at the gym is enjoying time in the steam room or sauna afterward. I do believe that’s my only reason for going to the gym.

On days when I’m literally dragging my feet, I’d cut my hour-long workout session by half just so I could get to the part I love.

The feeling of the therapeutic heat warming my body makes my effort worth it, and I keep going back just to feel that feeling.

I made a pact with myself that I wouldn’t enjoy the rewards of the steam room or sauna unless I’d exercised for at least 30 minutes. This way, I’d keep my fitness level up and I wouldn’t feel like I wasted my time at the gym.

This approach has been working for me for years, and I keep fit and happy because of it.

Find a tempting reward that will keep you motivated to keep fit, especially on days when you’re not feeling up to the challenge!

6. Try Not to Skip Multiple Days at a Time

Consistency is key.

When you start skipping days, you’re sending a subtle signal to your brain that it’s okay to slack off and keeping fit is no longer a priority.

Your body will start to feel sluggish, and you’ll be unmotivated. All because of the days you missed.

It’s okay to take a rest day every other day, but missing multiple days or weeks is setting yourself up for failure.

Keep it consistent with an exercise routine that needs only 30 minutes every day or schedule going to the gym three times per week.

That way, you’ll keep fit and stay on track without feeling burnt out.

7. Don’t Forget About Muscle Recovery!

If you’re working on building muscle, which we all should be doing at some point in our lives, then the more time that can pass between workouts, the better because muscles need to repair and grow after a tough workout.

On days when you don’t work out or exercise your muscles, take a few minutes to give them a good stretch.

Plan your workouts so that you’re not overstressing one set of muscles every day. Instead, try to work on the same set of muscles every three days, which should give your body enough time to breathe and heal.

Bodybuilding.com suggests 48-72 hours of rest between maximum effort sessions to allow your muscles and nervous system to return to their normal state.

On a day when you don’t feel like doing much, give your body a break by doing some light stretches. A little goes a long way, so there’s no need to push past 100% every time you work out.

8.  It’s Never Too Late to Start!

A gentle approach might be the remedy to your problem.

Start by walking and keep going from there. Keep fit without feeling overwhelmed.

Don’t worry about reaching your goal weight or getting to some number on the days your heart isn’t in it.

Focus on moving no matter what time of the day it is.

Every hour and minute that you keep moving, even if it’s at a slow pace, will help keep your health and weight in check.

9.  Don’t Compare Yourself to Others, or Even Your Past Self

Your health journey to keep fit is not a competition with others or your former self.

Keep moving, and keep going no matter what your fitness level is at the moment. You can always improve with time and practice!

Comparing yourself to others or even your past self will only keep you from moving forward.

Your fitness journey is about improving who you are at the moment and appreciating how far you’ve come.

Focus on what you can do today for a better tomorrow!

10. Keep a Positive Attitude!

No matter what happens to make you feel down, keep going and stay positive!

You can’t let someone else’s success get in the way of your own, so don’t be discouraged by others who are doing better than you right now.

Their fitness journey is different than yours, so your training sessions might be drastically different, and that’s okay.

Keep fit by keeping a positive mentality!

It Doesn’t Have to Suck!

Do what makes you happy, not what you think will please others when you share your story.

When you simply don’t feel like it, these ideas should help keep you motivated when it comes to fitness.

If any one of them resonates with you personally, then please share!

I hope to inspire more people to keep moving no matter what life throws at them.

  2. “Find what works best and keep doing it” is such powerful advice. It’s often given in solutions-focused therapy, because weirdly enough, we tend to back away from things we’re doing well.

I think a lot of times we feel like we’re not making enough progress, and instead of adding more to a winning routine, we drop the routine entirely. I’m doing a walking routine right now that is definitely helping. I need to commit to it and do that much more, not completely change what I’m actually enjoying.

You’re absolutely right Ashok! Build on what’s already working well instead of changing it completely. Change and progress take time!
