How to become energetic and motivated
Gloomy rainy days really take a toll on my mood, energy, and motivation. I am incredibly sensitive to the changes in the elements. I radiate and reflect the sunshine when the sun is out in full force but as soon as the clouds turn dark, my mood takes a serious hit.
My theory is that this change in mood has something to do with the way I grew up. In Jamaica, rainy days were for sleeping. It really felt like the whole island stopped moving while the raindrops were beating on the roof.
Looking back now, I realize how insane that was because here in America, we’re always rushing, rain or shine, to school or work.
So, what causes a lack of energy and motivation?
From the lack of restful sleep to not eating the right foods to being careless with your energy to the ugly monster called depression, the list of things that drains your energy and motivation is vast. It mostly depends on your lifestyle choices and your health conditions.
For example, if you eat unhealthy foods it drastically affects your mood and attacks your mental and physical health.
What to do if you’re not feeling energetic or motivated
When the days are dark and gloomy and my to-do list is packed, I’ll operate at a much slower pace than I normally do on sunny days. That way I’ll still make progress and feel accomplished at the end of the day.

Slow down
If you want to sleep all the time and you have no energy to complete simple tasks throughout the day, it’s imperative that you remind yourself to be gentle. It’s okay to have a slow day and it’s also okay to not feel like doing anything even when your workload is piling up.
Taking care of yourself should always be first priority. Eliminate the things that stress you out and focus on what brings you joy. You deserve to live exactly how you want to live no matter what anyone else says.
Take a nap
Sometimes the best way to tackle the lack of energy and motivation is to relax your whole body and mind and go to sleep. Sleep is rejuvenating and, let’s be honest, we really don’t get enough restful sleep.
From the noisy air conditioning units to the nonstop traffic outside our windows it’s extremely hard for someone who lives in the city to get peaceful, restful sleep. If you have the means to get away to somewhere quiet where the only thing you hear are insects and frogs singing through the night then do it and do it often. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you.
How can I increase my energy and motivation?
Eat energizing foods
After you’ve risen from your much-needed nap, it’s time to nourish your brain with energizing food. Yes, food is a huge mood booster and we automatically turn to it when we are moody. The problem that arises when we turn to food to aid our moody feelings is that we’re using the wrong types of food. Food can be split into a ton of different categories, but we’ll focus on comfort food and energy-boosting foods in this post.
Comfort food is the food we eat when we’re moody and sad and want to wallow in our depressive state. It’s not the type of food that will give you an extra kick when you need it the most. Foods like ice cream, pizza, and overly-sweet pastries are the types of food that should be avoided at all costs when moodiness strikes. You’re always welcome to indulge a little when you’re feeling better.
Energy-boosting foods should be your best friend during moody periods. Fruits, nuts, and plenty of water should be your go-to snacks. They add nutrients, minerals, and natural sugars which will safely and effectively give you the natural kick you need to jumpstart a better mood. Snack healthy and you’ll be feeling energized and motivated in no time.
Do a simple exercise
There’s no doubt that a little sweat will make you feel like your energetic self again. There are a ton of studies that prove that exercising is a mood booster. No, you don’t need to run a marathon to feel better but a brisk walk and some fresh air might be all you need.
Don’t underestimate the power of a moving body. Stay active to keep the blues away.
Avoid negativity at all cost
Negative energy will steal your joy, light, motivation, and energy. Learn how to spot a negative situation from afar and change your route in order to avoid it completely. It’s not worth the stress and the pain that it brings.
Your energy is precious and you should protect it at all costs. The moment you let negativity influence you is the moment your light starts to dim. Protect yourself by avoiding all things negative.
How to become energetic and motivated every day
Be your own dedicated cheerleader! Keep cheering especially when you are lacking energy and motivation.
Knowing your why will add the extra boost you might need to complete the small tasks to achieve your dreams on the days when all you want to do is sleep.
Start the day by doing something you enjoy. This will automatically put you in a good mood and encourage you to tackle the most difficult tasks on your to-do list.
Make a list of the three things that motivate you and keep them visible all day. It can be short quotes, an image/vision board, your loved ones’ names, or a specific scent that you love. Surround yourself with what makes you happy and you’ll see that in a short time you’ll be back to your bubbly or not-so bubbly self.
Life has its ups and downs and we all have good and bad days but don’t let that stop you from being productive. You owe it to yourself to achieve all your dreams. How to become energetic and motivated all depends on the choices you make.
